A Short History of 65 Greene Street

A Short History of 65 Greene Street

Suite Caroline lives on the second floor of a building that has seen nearly four centuries of transformation. Located on one of SoHo’s most storied blocks, 65 Greene Street has housed everything from brothels to millinery factories, survived waves of reinvention, and become part of what’s now the SoHo Cast-Iron Historic District.

Built in the late 1800s, the building’s cast-iron façade once showcased New York’s flourishing garment trade. Before that, Greene Street was a center of nightlife and vice, with the highest concentration of brothels in the city by 1870. Later, in the mid-20th century, the block faced near-demolition under a failed Robert Moses expressway plan.

But the artists arrived first. In the 1960s and '70s, they moved into the vacant lofts, creating the foundation for SoHo’s rise as a creative capital. From painting studios to cutting rooms, the building became a quiet witness to New York’s constant evolution.

Today, Suite Caroline continues that story of artistry and transformation. We’re honored to work in a space with such a textured past—refined, expressive, and always reinventing itself.
